How do I create working PDFs from my Quark 6.0/6.5 files?

Quark has made it simple to export high-resolution PDFs directly from the application, without the need for Adobe Acrobat or Distiller. First, disable your OPI XTension by moving the file OPI.xnt from your XTensions folder to the XTensions (disabled) folder and then restart Quark. When your magazine is complete and all fonts are loaded, go to File and then choose Export > Layout as PDF:

Quark 6: Export Command

You'll come up with the following dialogue box. Ideally, we would like to receive one PDF file for each page of your magazine -- but this is not a requirement! What's important to us is that we get files that contain consecutive pages (e.g., 1-10, 11-21, etc.)

Here's how it would look if you were creating a PDF for only page 1. Before you click on the save button, hit the options button.

Quark 6: Export Menu

The options button brings up the following window. The settings you make here will be saved for the Quark document you are working on, provided you save your Quark file afterwards. You may leave the information in the "Layout Info" tab blank.

Make sure "include hyperlinks" is turned off.

On the job options tab, make the settings as shown below. This is critical in order to get your PDF made in high resolution with fonts included.

If your magazine prints only in CMYK, make the settings on the output tab as shown below. This will include the 1/8" bleed that we require.

If you are using spot colors, make the output tab look like the screen capture below.

When you click on "OK", and then "Save", Quark will save the page you are working on as a high resolution PDF file.
